Running Windows 2003 with Terminal services. I have a user who added an extremely long website (over 254 characters) name to his favorites. Proceeded to log out for the night and came back in this morning.
While trying to log in he gets the message "windows cannot copy \\server1\profile\user\favorites\*super long file name* to location C:\profile\user\favorites *super long file name *... Detail : the file extension is too long.

Ok I understand the problem. But How can I go about getting rid of it seeing as neither location listed shows the file?

Windows 2003 then proceeds to give him a temporary profile which is lacking all of his programs and email.

You can go one folder up from where its located, cut and paste it onto say your desktop, delete the file in question, then cut and paste it back to where you originally had it. This solved the same problem we had with a word file that got saved onto one of our roaming profile users.

I should have made that more clear.. cut and paste the folder that contains the file. Since you cant actually delete the file from where it is right now, moving the folder that has it allows you the luxury of then being able to delete it and then you copy that folder minus the file back to where it was. Sorry.

You can try running the SUBST command from cmd prompt as follows;

SUBST X: <path on server>

From there you can go to drive X: and delete the file from there

Thanks Cstorms, although skeptical that would work, it actually did. Cut and deleted from server1 and poof, no more error.

I actually started to laugh at your response cause thats exactly how I felt when I did it just as a last resort before losing my mind. Glad it worked though.
