I am trying to compile my first software. When I am told to use the 'make' command, it says the command doen't exist! I am running Red Hat 7. [sig][/sig]

try finding a exeutable called make, its usually kicking around in the /bin or /usr/bin directories wherever it is add it to your path by typing export PATH=$PATH:<whatever>. Also some distributions may include gmake a gnu version of make.
