Extracting contents of BASIC (PDS7) files

DOn't know if this is possible.

We used to run a system written in BASIC, and were happy with it. The company that wrote it went bust about a year ago, and we have decided to replace it with "something newer". Unfortunately we need to get the data out - but to do this we need to understand the data structures, but these are contained within the BASIC files - and we don't have the source - nor can we get hold of them.

Is it possible to workout the file structures from the datafiles themselves?

It may be. I've done some of that with tax programs for example in the past and to convert data files to new accounting software which seems to be the type of thing you are talking about.

My suggestion:

Run the program twice, each time create only ONE database record. Then compare the differences between them.

Data minning can be interesting, if done right.
