Extract from external third-party database

We do have a central data warehouse but certain business areas also have databases which are controlled by external agencies.

I am now try to establish extracts from two of those external databases, using Cognos, but am hitting the problem that those third parties are keen to keep control of the situation.

Since, in both cases, the business is rather unsure about what exactly it requires, it is proving very slow to make any progress with these requirements.

Ideally what I wish to achieve is for the external agency to run a fairly generalised extract, so that we get a wide range of data presented but probably limited to a particular time slice (e.g. the extract would be run daily, weekly, etc.).

The extract file would then be transferred to this company and I would be able to process that file further to establish (through discussions with the relevant business area) a more precise extract file for forward loading.

Conceptually what I would expect to happen is for the third party to use Query or Impromptu to achieve their extract and then we would use Query to create the final file.

I have been advised that the ‘intermediate’ file cannot be a data cube but that an .imr file could be created and the SQL from that then used to produce the operational file (we would then need to define a catalog for that last file).

Has anybody got any thoughts on how I might achieve my objective ?
