I have an external hard drive and windows xp sais it needs to be formated to be used and well when I install the hard drive into my laptop everything is fine. I also have an Ipod and when it is pluged into my computer it also says it needs to be formated but then I take it and put it into my laptop and voila all is good. Please Help. I also have a printer and it works fine on all usb ports on my desktop computer so I am not sure what the problem is.

How large is drive? Did it come ready formatted - or did you use one of machines (laptop?) to partition/format it? Is it fat32 filestore? What about history of its use (just copied files on from laptop - or used backup software - or what?)

Can you run chkdsk on it from the laptop (I'm assuming laptop is xp or vista) - then try connecting it to other machines again (from a command prompt, type chkdsk x: /f, where x: is the external drive letter).

If you've room on the laptop to copy all stuff from external drive, could try doing that, then formatting it on xp machine, then copy stuff back and see if can be accessed by other 2 machines now.
