external video over http?

I am having a blast mastering Director 8.5's ability to play and manage video files (.AVI's are what I've been using so far)...

My question is can the video files be accessed if they are on a web server (either AVI or Quicktime formats) so that I can publish a CD Rom application but always be able to manage and update the video files - extending the life of the CD application.

If that IS possible, how do I achieve it?

Thanks for any light you guys / gals can shed on this!
