Hi Guys,

Would anyone know if it was possible to grab a web part for SharePoint which would allow 'user registration' within the SharePoint Site. Basically, I want to restrict those who are not part of AD so they cannot contribute to the site (currently set not to allow anonymous) unless they register their details.

Something along the lines of a forum registration would be great where the person enters a username and password for registration which then requires email validation and then automatically adds them to a group which has 'contributor' access to the site.

As always, thanx in advance.
Marko

Hello,

How would you authenticate those users that you want to sign up? You will have to create a user account for them, either in Active Directory or as local user accounts, since you need to use NTLM (if you do not have anonymous access turned on).

What you are looking for is indeed a nice feature and it would be a good thing to be able to do. In a forum scenario, the user credentials are usually stored inside a database table and it get's the authentication from there, but in sharepoint you need to add a Windows account (either local or a domain account) although once added in SharePoint the authentication/authorization takes place in SharePoint.

If you find a way to accomplish this, please let us know.

Best Regards,
Thomas

It is one of those catch22 scenario's I know, how do you allow an anonymous user to create an account without first authorising them???. There must be a way round this though, such as running the registration request under assigned account (setup for this purpose), though the actual process itself would be beyond me hence the request for a webpart or some form of script.

Would be really nice - hopefully someone may have the answer!!!.

I do not know if the AD account creation mode would work best in this kind of scenario. The problem will be to build a webpart that allows users to send a request and have an account created. I would think AD account creation mode would make it a tiny bit easier, but then you would have to setup sharepoint into that AD and then use ther "internal" users in another AD.
All I have seen is a webpart that actually allows users to change their AD password from SharePoint, never seen anything like a registration webpart.

As said...very nice to have feature :)
