External USB HD causing reboots when recognized??

I recently purchased a WD 120 GB USB hard drive, and an Adaptec USB 2.0 card. The hard drive gets recognized and operates fine when plugged into my pre-existing 1.1 ports, but when plugged in to my new 2.0 ports...it puts my computer into a constant reboot loop until I turn the hard drive off. The funny thing is that other things operate just fine off of the new 2.0 ports, just the hard drive won't work. Any suggestions?? Thanks!! (If it's any help...about a year ago, I had one of those USB memory keys which caused the same problem some of the times. This was of course on my 1.1 ports at the time)

Do you have the instructions for the USB hard drive case? Look and see if the unit is USB 2.0 compatible. USB 2.0 is SUPPOSED to be backwards compatible with 1.1, but this is real life! What type of USB cable does the drive use? If replaceble, try a USB 2.0 cable. The shielding is different.
