I have an SBS 2003 server that has:

1. an external 1.5 terabyte USB drive permanently attached and
2. one of two 320gig external drives attached at any one time as I swap these around each day to copy backups for offsite storage

All has been going swimingly for a few months with this setup.

Two days ago two updates were automatically performed:

KB973867
KB976098

At the same time I updated the AVG antivirus running on the server which required a power down.

Since the server has come back up, although the 1.5 terabyte USB drive performs as normal BOTH of the 320 gig hard drives will allow you to view them briefly via explorer, but once a copy of any data is attempted to either of these drives the copy fails a couple of minutes later and I get these event ids in this sequence:

Event ID 51 Source disk: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3 during a paging operation. (many of these in quick succession)

Event ID 57 Source ftdisk: The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Event ID 50 Source Ntfs: {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

Event ID 1 Source VDS Basic Provider 1.0: Unexpected failure. Error code: 2@01000004

Event ID 10 Source Virtual Disk Service: Unexpected provider failure. Restarting the service may fix the problem. Error code: 8000FFFF@020A0008

So within the space of a few seconds it fills the event logs with predominantly Event ID 51 closely followed by a lot of Event ID 57.

I don't believe it to be a hardware problem as both of the 320gig USB hard drives do this and it would be a real coincidence if that were the case. I've run a chkdsk which reports no errors.

Once I stop the USB Mass Storage Device service and unplug the drive, the events stop, otherwise it continues to fill the event logs indefinitely. It actually brought the server down this morning when it attempted to do an automated copy to the device.

I am not sure what to do as the other USB device is fine, it seems not to like these other two external devices for some reason.

I can't seem to find anything applicable from searching google/microsoft either. EventID 10 talks about the Virtual Disk Service and to try restarting it but it is already started.

Those two KB updates don't seem to be pertinent to the problem either and I haven't found any related problems similar to mine tied in with these updates.

I've also rebooted the server a couple of times to no avail.

What should I try next?

Thanks

Dan
