When loading a large spreadsheet I am told that an external reference is trying to access a spreadsheet that does not exist. My problem is that I can not find the cell that contains this invalid external reference. Using 'find' locates all the cells with valid external references, but I can't find the invalid one.

Try insert-name-define. Click on each name and view its reference at the bottom. See if you can find one that refs an external workbook. Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word

You can often remove a link if you can't find it (and yes, they can be really good at hiding!) by selecting Edit, Links, Change Source, then choose the spreadsheet you are working in.
