I am going to have DSL running within the week at my parents home. I plan on getting a wireless router(not sure as to which one yet). Probably the g-broadbanb (b/c of compatibility with 802.11b.

Question: what do you recommend in terms of equipment? the router itself will also have 4 ports so that I can link up the desktop in one room and I will get a wireless pc card for the laptop.

I live down hte block from my parents place. Is there anything I can do to be able to pick up the signal from my parents place via the laptop so that I may 'share' the dsl access??

Depending if you have line of sight to their place. If you do you can use wireless bridges to span. I have been looking at some and there are some that can reach 10 miles. I am researching installing a wireless network for a client who is going to do the same type of thing with his neighbor. Unfortunately they live in the country so the houses are 1400' apart.

sprite, havanajoe,

Please look at this site: htt:\\
You want to select Forums, and then the Wireless Internet Providers forum. These guys shoot distances regularly of incredible distances.

You might also try the Wireless Networking forum as well. These guys shoot the across the block stuff all the time.

If you could take a digital picture from one site to the other, or draw a reasonable map or diagram, it would help them.

The best answer to your question is, it depends on a lot of data you have not provided.

One possibility, of reasonable cost, may be possible for you if the sites are on the same transformer:
I bought two of these powerline adapters by Siemens at CompUsa for $70 after rebates.
