We have a couple of 012 modules but no ring generator. Can we bring in external ring generator in to the backplane without causing too much grief? Also, we have an old 391A1 power supply that allows external -48 to be brought in to power the system. Same question -- is there some place on the backplane where we can bring in -48 to run the system when power fails?

They make a ring generator unit that is designed to be placed inside the power supply - all of the connectors are already there. (129B Frequency Generator)

No, the 391A1 DOES NOT ALLOW you to "BRING IN" external power.

That jack is there ONLY FOR YOU TO TEST if the 391A1 is CORRECTLY CREATING 48V DC.

DO NOT put ANY POWER THERE, only a VOM set to read DC Voltage.

And, as TOMD says, the Ring Generator is designed to fit the 391 Series Power units, and they are all over the place and not too expensive.

BUT, you have to dissemble the power unit to install it.

A lot of times, what happens is, a TECHNICIAN "UPGRADES" a power unit, but fails to realized the OLD POWER UNIT had the RING GENERATOR installed.

Thanks, Tom and Merlinman. Sorry, this power supply is a 391A, not a 391A1, and it has an RJ-45 type jack on the front marked "Aux Power Input -48 VDC 0.8 amps" Clearly that's not enough to run the whole system, but what's it for? I've had this unit apart and I see a connector that must be for the ring generator. Any pointers on where I might find one?

I'd seriously consider getting a newer power unit (391A3 or 391C1) - they are not that expensive - and both can accomodate the internal ring generator. If you can't find one - I may be able to track one down.

Well, yes that is what that port was for.

HOWEVER, all of those EXTERNAL POWER UNITS were RECALLED.

I may have a RING GENERATOR in stock, and other folks may as well.

Yes, the 391A is a backup, we have a newer 391A3 in the system. Still looking for the ring gen to go inside.

And, if you really want to have fun, Put the old 391A in there, and plug an RJ45 Cord in that port you mentioned.

You will notice that the LAST TWO CARDS on the CARRIER will DIE immediately.

I have more stories about that, but this is not the time or place.

Thanks Merlinman, word to the wise...

Does anyone have any schematics of the Merlin cards and backplane they might share?
