External monitor problems on my Thinkpad

I just got a new IBM Thinkpad T42 and I am having some problems with hooking my L200p monitor up to it. The video card is an ATI Radeon 9000 with 64MB of mem. The monitor is a IBM Thinkvision L200P that supports 1600x1200 native resolution at 85Hz.
When I just an Analog cable to hook up to the monitor it supports the 1600x1200, but the picture is not clear and "fuzzy". When I use a DVI cable the picture becomes clear but it will not support 1600x1200.
I have checked everything in the BIOS and every possible setting in Windows and on the monitor I can think of but I am at a loss. Also, obvious ones like updating the drivers and microcode.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

BTW: I am using Windows XP Pro SP2.

Oh, I might mention that the monitor worked great on my old Thinkpad. A22m.

It could be either the monitor or the cable, or even possibly the video card's output that's the problem. Have you tried another monitor and another VGA cable?

Yes, I tried a differant cable and monitor with the same results. The weird thing is my old laptop works perfectly with the same setup (monitor & cable). The only thing I can come up with is the new laptop video card does not support 1600x1200 on the DVI port and the analog signal loses quality on a digital monitor but I can't find any documentation to support that.
Thanks!

It may be that the resolution and refresh rates are getting too high for the output circuitry. Can you reduce the vertical frame rate down to 60Hz? It may flicker, but is it more clear?

It's already at 60Hz and won't go any lower.
