External Modem problems in Mandrake 8

I have an Intel 810 motherboard with a single serial port.
The Hard disk contains both windows 98 and Mandrake 8, and will boot to either OS through LILO.
In windows, the serial port is shown as com1 and can operate over the attached Motorola Modem Surfer without any problems.
In Mandrake, however, the Hard Drake config application does not detect any modem, and when I configure /dev/ttyS0 (using setserial -g /dev/ttyS0 uart 16550 port 0x03f8 irq 4) and then select the modem as my internet access, I receive a message 'modem is busy'.
I think it is the serial port that Mandrake does not recognize, rather than the modem, but am unsure how to proceed.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a "win-modem"?
Try a different modem to start with. /Sören

No, the Motorola Modem Surfer is a stand alone, external modem with on board control functions. The reason I suspect the port instead of the modem is that I don't see even a flicker of any LED (CD, TD, SD, OH) when the modem search is initiated through Hard Drake, and only the RI--Ring Indicator light is lit...(it never goes out).

Hi,

Did you try /dev/cua0 instead of /dev/ttyS0 ?

Regards
