External keyboard for Dell Laptop-No Talk!

I have a D600 dell 1.4 gig processor, 1 gig mem, 40 gig harddrive, running Windows 2000. When I hook up my external keyboard it doesn't find it. I have many PS2 keyboards in the different locations I use my laptop, so I don't really want to buy 5 USB keyboards to replace them. I have two PS2 to USB adaptors but they only want to work with one lame ergonomic keyboard. Am I missing a driver or something. Where can I get it?

Maybe the port is not active in the BIOS.
