I'm looking to pick up an external HDD. I've got about $200 to spend and, naturally, I wanna get as much capacity as possible. Is there anyone who would recommend one brand over the other, and, if so; why?

Also, were's the best plays to buy it? Online?

Thank you!

My personal choice is:
Seagate, very reliable.

As for Price versus capacity, you also need to specify what type of connection you want:
Firewire+USB
or just USB.

Drives with both connection are obviously a little more expenisve than those with onle USB 2.0.

Anyway: For $200.00 your best bet IMHO is one of these:

In their 200GB versions with Firewire, or 250GB without firewire.

Anyway, I stay away from Maxtor externals, After hearing horror stories from friends and clients of drives going belly up for no particular reason.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If it's simple straight storage then the cheapest way to go is a good quality external enclosure and then just pick your own IDE drive to go in there.
I recently bought an 3.5 inch Icy Box with USB2 and Firewire and then seperately I purchased a 250gig WD Caviar.

Example:

But I'm sure there are other good quality enclosures available similar to this.

Go with [bWestern Digital Essential[/b] Series External Hard Drives. The safest, fastest and the most reliable outta the lot. Ive bin using this for months and moving it around quite often. So far no probs. I highly recommend them.
