hi all...well here goes. in my current rig im using an external hard drive...its a western digital 200gb drive in a metal gear substance usb enclosure. on this drive i have stored approx 100gb of data which includes applications, pictures, video, drivers etc...basically everything i wanted to keep saved b4 i format my pc ( due to yet another upgrade ). the actual problem i have is ive recently built a tower for a friend of mine and ive plugged my external hard drive into the newly built pc so i could use the codecs and other applications stored on it. it shows up in my computer like when connected to my pc as a hard drive but when i double click it to go in a find what i want it seems to be empty....when i right click the drive and go to properties to see how much space is taken it shows as used space 0 bytes...free space 0 bytes ?????. ive been into disk management in administrative tools and its not showing in there with the other hard drive and cd drive ( it was in disk management on my pc ???? ) but it does show in device manager under disk drives ?????. id be so grateful if someone can explain why when connected to my pc its all there but when connected to a new pc its empty. both pcs are running windows xp service pack 2. thanks in advance to who ever c
an help.

If the HD is jumpered as Master or Slave, then try CS(cable select).

hi ski, thanks for your reply, the hdd inside the new pc is set to cable select and the usb hdd is also set to this ( which was default ).ive now tried in all different configs ie master/slave and also one cs and the other master and also one cable select aand the other slave but still no joy im afraid.

Are both computers the same format (Fat32 - NTFS)? Fat32 can't "see" NTFS.

hi micker377, yep theyre both ntfs.......both mine and the newly built pc are pretty similar software wise, xp sp2, norton 2005, using same media players and codecs both ntfs file systems etc.

New thought - are you using "Go-Back" or any other third party protection on YOUR system that would keep the other system from reading it?

hey micker377, no im not using any third party protection on my system.......ive thought across these lines ie is there anything in xp that prevents files/folders created with my pc being seen by other pc`s. there was two users on my pc......me as administrator and my g/friend as a power user which means she cannot see my documents in my computer but i can see hers. would this or something else in xp have anything to do with my problem ??????.

Look in MS for "Taking Ownership of Hard drive". This may apply to building a new system, nut you may get some clues.
