I recently purchased a new computer with this set up:
Chaintech SK8T800 Socket 754 / AMD Athlon 64 3700+ / 1024MB DDR PC3200

I have a Portable Western Digital 60 Gb Drive that has had no problems on my other computer. When I attach it to my new computer...sometimes It recognizes it...sometimes not. Sometimes it will allow me to see the icons of the photos (it is my photo backup device), but will not let me view them. All other USB devices seem to work fine (Printer, flash Drive, Cable Modem). I tried a friends Portable HD and the same thing happens? While trying to transfer files or install from his drive, the Drive basically disappears and re-finds itself..interupting the transfer ot installation. I have tried to update the USB Drivers from Chaintech...didn't change/or fix anything. The Western Digital HD does work flawlessly on my old computer still and I had it working fine on my friends computer. This HD does have a seperate power supply and not run from only the USB. Are there any settings that need to be adjusted to get this to work? I have tried EVERY other USB port on my new computer with the same results. It seems to not like Portable HD's? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your input! I have tried numerous times un-installing it in Device Manager. Sometimes it finds itself...other times not. Sometimes, unhooking the power or the USB from the drive and plugging it back in allows me to see it again...but it still does not allow me to access it.

Can you (temp)put the "problem" hard drive in the ecomputer as a "slave" (don't forget to check the jumper - all external drives are set as "master")?. This would at least tell you if the hard drive is failing, or the USB enclosure/power supply is at fault.

I added an internal PCI USB Card and it worker fine. Still no answer on the problem with the motherboard USB ports? Any ideas?

You state that the other USB devices work OK, did you have any of these plugged in when you tried to use the "native" USB ports? Did you try the external drive as the only USB device hooked up?

yes, at first , it was the lone USB device. Then when it didn't work properly, I tried others. When they DID work properly, I tried the HD again. I recently added a USB PCI card and the HD does function correctly with those USB ports. I still need to get my original USB ports to work with it though.
