I have an external harddrive(maxtor) and the wrong power cable got connected to it and burned electronics could be smelled. I bought a new external case and installed the drive, but the drive is a no go.....is there anything I can do to recover the data from this drive?

Send it to a recovery specialist.

Well you could attempt to install the drive directly into a PC, and hope it gets picked up the PC's BIOS. if not, then a recovery specialist is your only choice.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Vacunita's first suggestion is best.

However, if you find that connecting the drive directly into a computer still doesn't work, check out the following whilst it's still cabled up to that PC:

1. Is BIOS recognising the drive?

2. Can you hear if the drive is spinning?

If it's not recognised, but is spinning, you could try changing the pcb controller board on the bottom of the drive. You will need to obtain one from an identical drive preferably with the same pcb revision number.

It will all come down to what value you place on the data...
