my external hard drive occasionally comes up with files duplicated and triplicated and often more than that.what is the reason for this,i suspect that it is when i unplug and reconnect i am doing the wrong thing can anyone help.

What type of external hard drive is it, did it come with any software, what do you use it for backing up or just as extra storage?

Make sure you stop the device before removing it. Double-click the little green arrow in your systray and stop the device before removing it. Another possibility is the backup program you are using is set to keep more than one copy of backed-up files. You want "incremental backup" not full backup every time it runs.
