I have External Hard USB Drive 3.5 "(SimpleTech). Unfortunately, I have put wrong Adapter & turn Power ON and later on I realize that I have put wrong adapter. I have tried to put correct adapter but I see light comes up & then go away. I also smell some burning smell on side of Power adapter.

I still have warrantly but I don't want to loose data. I guess Customer support will replace it but I will loose my data. Any idea ? Is my harddrive still safe or it will be bad ? Any idea ?

Thanks

In order to attempt data recovery, you will need to open up the casing of this external drive. Be aware that doing this might negate your warranty.

Remove the hard drive and try connecting it to a desktop or minitower machine. If you can hear the drive spinning, and the BIOS recognises it, then you may be able to read off the data.

However, it's possible that applying the wrong voltage or polarity to the external drive unit, may have damaged the hard disk drive electronics as well. If this is the case, then you could try replacing the hard drive's circuit board with a known good one, but it will need to be the same make and model, and the board must be the same revision number.

Finally, depending upon how important that data is to you, you might wish to send the drive to a specialist data recovery company who can take your drive apart and rebuild it in their clean room in an attempt to retrieve your files. Be ready to part with some serious money...

Good luck.
