Please can someone help me to restore my file?
i just bought the wd passport portable hdd last week until today is totally down, i had store files in the hdd when i received it until last nite. today i try to plug the usb to my pc not recognize anything and i did try on my laptop still the same. i guess still under warranty, but i want to get my file. any suggestion....please someone can help me?
thank you so much

Firstly, have you tried a different USB connecting cable?

Second, can you hear if the hard drive inside the external box is whirring/spinning?

Third, is this external unit receiving its power via the USB cable, or is it using a separate PSU? And if the latter, does that PSU appear to be working?

Bottom line is if you cannot get it working externally, then if the files are very important you'll need to try opening the box to get at the hard drive itself, and try attaching the drive directly into the motherboard interface on a working desktop or minitower PC. This will then tell you if the problem is in the external box's interface, or if the drive itself has gone down.

Before opening up the external box, explain your predicament to the supplier, and get him to ensure your guarantee is still good after breaking open the case.

Hello Goaoz,
thank you so much for your reply.
I did try on another usb cable.
I heard a click click on the drive when i plug in the computer
it's a portable wd passport usb hard drive
but if i open it, i don't think they will exchange my hdd.
is personal file and pictures.
the box seems like hard to open no screw.
i guess i don't have choice, today is my last day to return or exchange from the retailer.
but anyway thank you so much

I'm guessing it's powered by the computer's USB, so the "click click" you heard doesn't sound good. Make as much noise and fuss about losing your extremely valuable data, and maybe the supplier will relent and open it up for you! Worth a shot...

And yes, some of these cases can be tricky little critters to open up. Screws hidden under rubber stick on feet, or under "Void if opened" labels.

Good luck.
