I purchased a HD-343U2S enclosure and i added a HDT722525DLA380.

i am currently running windows xp and it has detected the hard drive.

When i open up "My Computers" the external hard drive is not listed.

When i bought the Vibe HD-343U2S it contained a driver which could only be operated by windows 98. I have a higher operating system windows XP.

The problem is that i cannot use the hard drive because its not listed on "my computers" but my computer detected it.

Thanks in advance

Go into Computer Management, then Disk Management. You will hopefully see your new disk listed in the righthand lower pane. It will probably not have a drive letter allocated to it, and it may not yet be formatted. Rightclicking on the white rectangular area relating to this drive will bring up a menu allowing formatting, drive letter selection etc.

Dito to Rogers reply:

Start/Control panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management/ THEN
Partition and Format.
The Disk will then appear in Windows.

To piggy-back on the OP, after doing everything in 'disk management', the drive (same kind as OP)still is not listed as an option. I haven't contacted vendor, yet, and am hoping to resolve on my own. <crossing fingers>

TIA!

Phlipm34, it would have been better to start your own post rather than hijack macrabre's!

However...

If you fitted the disk into the external case yourself, first check it's set as a Master. If yes, and external case cabling looks ok, can you hear drive spinning? If yes, then I suggest you remove it and attached drive directly to the computer's IDE or SATA interface.

Now, is it recognised in the BIOS, in Windows, Disk Management?

Is this a brand new drive, or one that's been used before?

If the case and drive came new as a whole unit, then opening it up might negate your warranty - check with supplier first.

No hijacking intended, just didn't want to clog up the board with the same questions, etc.

Thanks and I'll give it a try. It's a brand new drive, btw.

go to
or

make sure the usb drive is not connected

and do the registry tweak to make hidden devices visible
then go to device manager /view/ show hidden devices
then open storage volumes and delete all the greyed out keys

do the same in the USB controller section

reboot and plug in the drive and it should assign a drive letter

believe it or not that is a common issue

Well, I tried what you said, went to the links provided, and nothing. I also upgraded one of my ports from USB 1.1 to 2.0, and again, nothing.

Short of taking into a shop for 'data recovery', I feel like I've tried everything. >.<

Short of taking into a shop for 'data recovery', I feel like I've tried everything...?? I thought you stated earlier that it was a brand new drive. If it really is brand new, why do you think you need 'data recovery'?

"Well, I tried what you said...", so presumably when you connected it directly to the computer's IDE i/face it wasn't recognised in the BIOS, Windows, or Disk Management.

You didn't say what make and model of drive, but get the manufacturer's drive diagnostics off their website, run the tests, then you can go back to whoever sold you this brand new disk and request an immediate replacement!
