I have a seagate external hard drive, it was beeping when plugged into my desktop so I thought it was failing, it probably is but when I attach it to my laptop it works fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Use this tool to check it. You don't know anything until you test it. This is the manufacturer's tool.
Is it powered by USB alone or does it have its own wall wart to power it? The reason I ask is that some USB only drives use two usb ports to power their drives and if you only use one, it may not get enough power. Likely not the case with you though.

Give us the model if SEATOOLS doesn't shed light on the status of the drive.

Are both Desktop and Laptop running the same OS ? Same USB spec ?

Do you have other USB devices connected to your desktop, and is the external hard drive the only USB deviced on the laptop ? if so, you could be exceeding the USB power source limits on the desktop. If so, solution would be an external powered USB hub, or power direct to the external drive if it's set up for it.
