external graphics card laptop

hi

if i brought a external graphics card for a laptop to upgrade it could i still get my laptop screen to display the picture & not the external screen?

if so would the laptop use the mb's from the external graphics card & not the laptop?

this is too be used with windows vista

any help will be most grateful
