Hi,
I am running W2003 SBS and back up to a selection of External Lacie Firewire Drives. Connection is via a 2 port Lacie Firewire PCI card. This system has worked fine for the last 6 months but since I connected 2 drives at the same time I have had problems with drive recognition. Re-booting the server will sometimes cure the problem but this is far from satisfactory. When a drive is finally recognised I follow the correct procedure when it comes to removal but I have the same problem when I come to reconnect a different drive.

Is there a procedure of checks to go through?
Should I reinstall the firewire card?

Thanks for your help - Tristram

I take it you are running win xp or server?

I am not the best at server stuff but i have some experience with firewire and usb drive setups. If it were me i would first use the mfgr diagnostic program and write zeroes to the hard drive, doing this with the drive out of the firewire box. But thats me, there are other ways of doing this, you could likely do it while in the box.
Either way that may cure the problem by fixing the hard drive.
If that doesnt do it then perhaps reinstall the firewire card. Actually, reinstalling the firewire card is a lot easier so maybe do that first.
Of course you always want to check the cable and possibly try another cable. Cable, wether ide, sata, usb, firewire break on the inside and we never know by looking at them, they have to be tested in one manner or another.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Is it possible that the drives are trying to be recognized with the same drive letter?
