External database connection

I need to use SharePoint to grab information from an Access 2003 database on a different server and display it on my site. I have set the OLEDB jet 4.0 settings on SharePoint and am using FrontPage to insert the data view from the Data Source Catalog. When I try to add the database connection to the catalog using a custom connection string I get a Frontpage message indicating "Server error: An error occurred while retrieving the list of Databases from \\servername\directory\dbname: The retrieval service encountered and error during connection to the data source. Contact the server administrator for more information."
Can someone help me with this problem. It appears to be a credentials issue, just don't know how to work around it.
I want to say, in advance, that I appreciate any efforts
made to help resolve this issue.
