External data and .bmp files within Excel...

I have pasted a map file (.bmp) into a spreadsheet of Excel 2000. There are specific points on the map where i would like to reference external data. The problem is that cells are not available in or on the picture. How can i embed external data to specific areas of the pic file? Am i approaching this the correct way or is there another solution? Any and all help appreciated.

Try using textboxes to put your data in. View-Toolbars-Drawing

I tried the text box route but the only option here is Hyperlinks and i need external data references/formulas. Let me try to explain a little better then i did in the original post. I have a geographical area (city) that has points of interest plotted on it. Then i have an excel spreadsheet with data for each given point of interest on the map. I need to figure out how to combine the two so that the data (Excel) is displayed alongside of the point fo interest on the map. I want it to be linked somehow so that when the data is updated in excel, the map data will update as well. I am using Excel 2000. Microsoft does have a solution in the form of MapPoint software but it is a little expensive. I hope that helps with the explanation.

You know what I would do? Put the map in PowerPoint and then copy a given cell in Excel, go to PPT and hit Edit-Paste Special-Paste Link.

It SHOULD work, and not too tough to test, I think.
