Customer has a BCM 50 Rel. 3. I have connected an 1100 expansion module to an 1140e IP set and programmed it for external autodials. The 1100 expansion module now has a list of numeric autodials. What I want to do is have it show a list of Names rather than the telphone number. For example, instead of 222-2222 it would read "Head Office". I have tried Feature *1 to program external autodial but can't find a place to insert and name/label.

Sorry, this gets asked every 3 months, unfortunately it can't.

Auto dails will only show the number. But I know in the I3004 phone in the options there is a feature called lable buttons. That is the only place you mite change the name of the button.

I thought I had read in some literature that a "label" was possible on an 1140E set but, of course, the options ast stated do not appear to be available no matter where I look. This is a very disappointing limitation of the product and I can definitely see why a customer would want to see names rather than numbers, especially on an 1100 expansion module. When you go the the Nortel website and view the interative user guide for the 1140E with a expansion module on it, is shows names only but I am presuming those our internal autodials that have a directory name association.

I will use the Directory button key and set up a Personal Directory there and that should be the next best thing.

If they really want to see a name next to the autodial button, install an IP 1220 with the 18-Key LED (Light Emitting Diode) KEM that comes with paper labels, supported on Bcm50 3.0.

Most of the pictures you see of the 1100-series KEMs are being used with non-BCM systems (CS1K, etc) which support key re-lableing from the sets. As far as I am aware, that is not available on the BCM series.

Thanks for the responses. If I installed a 1230 with 18 button expansion, is there any difference in features between a 1140E w/expansion and a 1230 w/expansion with the exception that you can properly label the buttons on the paper strip? They guy who does all the autodials is the president and I would not want him to feel downgraded or the 1230 phone isn't as good in some other way! I haven't used the 12XX phones yet, how do they measure up for a user in comparison?

I have some 1220 and 1230 phones. The display is much lower quality and resolution. They lack backlighting. Other than that, they work pretty much the same way. No discernible difference in function or audio quality.

Other things seem to include Bluetooth, 1000 base-T switch, USB port. Thanks for the input. Dave

I personally think Nortel drop the ball on this. It is quite daft to have an autodial only display the number. It is up there with those silly little annoying things like set names only accepting 7 characters. Fine for a 10 user BCM50 that not so bad as it's unlikely you'd have duplicate names on something that size but when you go to larger systems like 100-150 users, it is quite possible to have say 2 or 3 people with the name Jonathon for example. It's tough explaining to a customer that has just paid $50,000-$60,000 for a new system and they have to accept

Jon 1
Jon 2
Jon 3

Surely it wouldn't take to much effort to rectify this especially since the 450 can now do 300 sets.

I agree this is an area that needs improvement and Nortel faild to hit the mark.

For external autodials, the key labels only show 10 digits. This is fine, unless you have a routing code (9) for trunk access. We have mandatory 10 digit dialing in this area, so we only see 9 digits of the phone after the routing code.

9 + 202-555-1212 is labeled as 9202555121.
9 + 202-555-1218 is labeled identically as 9202555121.

This makes it very difficult to identify the correct key, if someone has multiple keys programmed with autodials that happen to be similar (possibly from the same block of DIDs).

I would hate to pull out a Tie/Nitsuko Onyx installed in 1989 and explain to the customer that Nortels system is not capable of many of the features. Longer names, speedial bins on a button and others. One of the many things to add to Nortel's wish list. Now this customers starting to hate Nortel since they wasted their time and read a user guide that said you could "Label" a autodial button. THis info must have been a user guide for the CS1K. I had to enlighten them that the info was for another system but same phone!! We may put a paper cover on the modules LCD labled with names. Only if I could take a picture and send it to someone from Nortel. Or perhaps Nortel could have customized a "Desktop Assistant" LCD desi cover for a 1100 series expansion module, with instructions ( Cut a 3" piece of scotch tape and gently apply to the top and bottom of the desi sheet ).. WOW.
