Externa, HD Upgrade/Swap (quick q)

I have a BUSLINK 30 gig external USB drive that I'm running on my Inspiron 8100. I ran out of space 5x over and seeing some amazing deals on HD's in the market, I thought I would just crack the external case (I don't care about the warranty plus the drive was refurbished to begin with so I know I can definitely just pop that case open) and just swap the drives out - I'm assuming there is a standard drive mounting system in there.

I'm not incredibly clear on the process. What do you think? (obviously i would replace it with similar specs, but does it have to be the same RPM? the drive is a USB model, I believe usb1)

Should be no problem. I just changed my 3.5 hard drive from a USB 1.1 case to a USB/Firewire enclosure. The drive still read the same whether 1.1, 2.0, or Firewire. It would just be like changing the HDD in a desktop computer, the OS picks up any changes. Before buying a new drive, I would open the case and look at the HDD connections. You made need an adapter, depending on the case. I have laptop drives that are the same (universal), but are mounted in a "caddy" to fit in the respective laptops. Removed from the "caddy", and they are all the same.
