I have implemented three Cisco 1300 access points in a warehouse situation. Almost 100% is covered great. I have a situation where I have a computer behind a metal wall at the furthest end of the building. I want to put a PC behind the wall. The signal on the inside fo the wall is pretty good, on the other side not so good. I am thinking if I had a nic that had an antenna I could run a cable through the wall to get the best signal.

Any ideas?

Some Nics have antenna's that can be coupled with a wired antenna that can be routed. Try this link and see if this is something that may work for you.

This Antenna is not bi-directional and will boost the signal from your nic to the direction of the Wireless access-point or router. They do make bi-directional antenna's. I would go with the manufacturer of your NIC.

In the alternative, use a wireless USB type adapter and place it on the "good" signal side of the wall. Thread the USB cable through the wall to the workstation.

Bcastner,

That is an excellent way of doing it if he already has a USB type NIC versus a PCI type. I will keep that tip in my notes. Thank you.

BF0x,

That looks like an excellent solution to what I am trying to accomplish...

Thanks.

The key element is how far away the workstation is from any device.

For an antenna based solution, you really are talking about six feet, although a better antenna on the "bad" side of the wall all by itself may be sufficient if there are good multipath opportunities.

More than about six feet, consider using the USB adapter as discussed earlier.

It is well within the 6 feet window. It is about 4 inches max (the thickness of the wall).
