I'm working to set up my SMS 2003 server. I just have a question regarding Extending the AD Schema. What impact will this have on my network? What we have are 3 locations in different states. We have only begun using Active Directory so I don't believe it is very large. I am just not finding a good answer about the ramifications of extending the schema so SMS can publish to the AD. Anyone with experience able to enlighten me?

Thanks.

It will cause a dc synch...but other than that it should go fine, if your concerned about the ad synching between the dc's just do it at night and you should be good.

make sure you run it initially on the schema master. (in testing I did otherwise with some odd results that were fixed when I re-ran it on the schema master)

If it does fail...which I havent heard of...you cant delete it but you can disable it. It really goes pretty easy if you follow the MS directions.

anymore it seems like there are many programs out there that are extending the schema...exchange...fax programs and so on.

It should not affect any operation or management on your part, as TB said, just do it at night, if you have a busy network, shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the input. This is what my reading seemed to indicate but we weren't sure. Still think we will wait until next week to extend it since this is end of month and can't do anything that might affect production/shipping.

I recently setup an sms 2003 system too, with the help of people here, and i recognise a couple of the names on this thread..thanks guys.

Any way my input. The way i did it was to make a back of the system state A.D. before doing so, that way i had a rollback positon if i needed to restore it due to any problems.

Good luck
