It depends on what it is you're wanting to acoomplish. I have worked with clients that have had the base classes modified and made "smart" objects. The reports were created so that either SQL Server or Oracle DB's could be used and the report knew which one was which, and there was no need for modification. Also, controls were created that obtained their values from db columns for size, font, to populate labels, etc. This way, reports could be created and sold "out of the box", and IT personnel with no knowledge of Actuate could modify the reports simply by changing the values of the DB columns. You have to have an exceptional knowledge of Actuate to make this work, needless to say.
