how to get the same functinality in AIX 4.3 and AIX 5.2 what EXTENDED_HISTORY=ON gives in AIX 5.3?

any good substitute?

You could install and use [tt]bash[/tt] (it's in IBM's AIX Linux Toolbox). Set the HISTTIMEFORMAT environmental to the format of your choosing (see the man page for strftime or date), and you're set. You can change the format any time you like, the time is stored in the history file as a comment containing the number of seconds since epoch.
