I am trying to do a lab for extended vlans in a lab I created at home. everytime I try to create vlan 4010 e.g. in global config mode it gives me "error: VLAN 4010 is not user-configurable" I am running transparent, extended spanning-tree id is enabled.

I am using a 2950 IOS12.1 I have followed Ciscos' book and a CCIE thread and can't figure out where I am wrong. 12.1 is high enough for this (I think). Any ideas?

How many VLANs have you already defined and what type of 2950 is it? EI or SI?

I have a 2950T-24 that is running the latest IOS with EI features enabled - 12.1(22)EA14 - it is in VTP Transparent mode and I can create VLAN 4010 and I don't get any errors?

C2950-I6Q4L2-M Ver 12.1(12c)EA1, release software (fc1) I don't see either an EI or an SI in the boot up or on the switch ports are 12 fastnet 802.3. I don't know where else to look. Hate to just keep throwing numbers at you, but I am hoping these make sense.

Maybe double check that it is in transparent mode by the show vtp status command .

Thanks I will check. Sh Run shows transparent mode and extended spanning-tree enabled. I am wondering if I have corruption and thinking of upgrading the IOS, but that carries additional risk since I haven't done it before.

Thats pretty old IOS as well. I would update to the latest, delete the VLAD.DAT file and wipe it and start again.
EI or SI is hardware dependant. It should say somewhere in the 'show version' output whether EI or SI features are running.
