I came across the term "Extended virtual servers" in connection with sharepoint portal server central administrator. Can someone explain what actually does that mean? My guess is to create multiple portals on single sharepoint server ie. Is it right?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Yes I would say you are right. Before you extend a virtual server it does not really have anything to do with SharePoint, once you extend it, SharePoint will be configured to be used for that virtual website.

Lets say you create a new virtual server xyz.com in your IIS, then if you go into SharePoint Central Adminstration you will see it listed in the Virtual Server list, and you have the extend link there. Once you click extend and then fill in the information for the AppPools etc. SharePoint will "take over" that virtual server and configure it to run SharePoint.... WOW Such a long answer to a short question ;) ..Well it is Monday!

Cheers,
Thomas
