Hi guys,

I need some favour from experts,I am working on HP-11.11 Server . i need to extend my root filesystem i.e / which is in /dev/vg00/lvol3 by defualt.
I have free space available in rootvg vg00 but when i tried
# lvextend -L 1024 /dev/vg00/lvol3
lvextend: Not enough free physical extents available.
Logical volume "/dev/vg00/lvol3" could not be extended.
Failure possibly caused by contiguous allocation policy.
Failure possibly caused by strict allocation policy
i don't have tapedrive for backup & do re-install to change default size,Please guys tell me solution where i can do this without re-OS.either by SAM or command line in single user mode....

Your help on this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

this is when i tried to change contiguous..

HP-UX does not allow the mount directories "/" or "/stand" to be of ???? ?
?? l? non-contiguous allocation.

My favorite method is to create a make_recovery tape, then reinstall but change the filesystems ...

.. however, can you do a make_net_recovery to another server (think you'll need ignite installed, to be able to boot off it)
Boot off the "other" server
Interact with the install, to relayout the filesystems.

However, I've never installed of a make_net_recovery, but it works the same as a make_recovery tape.

Don't think you can do it rom single user, but from maintainence mode, I'll see if anyone else can help, if not I'll have to look it up as I've never used this method, but yes, I believe it can be done.

I'm curious... you have space on vg00 but when u do a lvextend it said not enough?

what is ur 'PE size' and 'Free PE' for vg00?
what is ur current filesystem size for / ?

check if you have fsadm install - I think this is a default install for 11.11

If you have a spare disk, it's easy.
Example: your disk is c1t0d0, another (maybe empty) disk is c2t0d0. You must find out which lv's are behind lvol3 (using "pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/c1t0d0"), probably lvol4 to lvol8. Then you pvmove everything that is behind lvol3 to the new disk, i.e. "for i in 4 5 6 7 8;do pvmove -n /dev/vg00/lvol$i /dev/dsk/c1t0d0 /dev/dsk/c2t0d0". Now you have free space on c1t0d0 to extend lvol3. Afterwards you move everything back - that's it, and all online without single user or maintenance mode. If you have a mirrored system disk it is still easier, as you only have to lvreduce the mirrors of lvols 4 to 8, extend lvol3, and reestablish the mirrors.

Moving onto spare disk is neat - not tried that but should work fine.
