Extend Disk while service online

Anyone know if it is safe to extend a disk while it is in use by using diskpart.exe? I have some exchange and SQL disks I want to extend and am looking for something in writing that says it is safe to do this while the services are running.

It's technically possible, but best practice not to. ;-)
