Hi All,
We have some CAT5 in an office running back to our cab. However we have re structured the office somewhat and now need the CAT5 to run to the other side of the office.

Is there a way of simply extending the cable or do I need to run new cable from the cabinet down again?

Many thanks for perhaps a somewhat simplistic question.

best would be a new cable
that said what I have done is terminate the existing cable to a jack terminate , run a new section of cat5e to the new location terminate this cable with jacks on both ends then use a short 1' or so patch cord to join the two .

I have done this and its the best way I have found to extend a cable .

or depending on the config you could use a 25' pre made patch cord from the existing jack

I would rather run a totally new cable or use a long patch cord. Using the short 1' patch cord method described works but it's a pain in future when someone decides to put a large cabinet in front of it and pushes against the wall (which destroys the jack), then you suddenly notice problems with your new office jack. You call in the tech and he's unable to trace the location of "field patch" because he expects everything going from the new office to the main patch panel. Unless the job is properly documented and the documents are not hidden in a drawer somewhere or at the bottom of a pile of papers, it will cause more problems.

It would best to leave the existing jack there and just pull in another one where you need it. We deal with "musical offices syndrome" everyday, and you will probably reuse that jack at one time or another. (If it is still there...)

When we run into this we send the new guy out to Home Depot or ADI for a cable stretcher.

See, there is such a thing.
