I'm new to phone systems -- programmer charged with phone responsibilities.
I have 2 extensions that ring at 2 phones and I can't figure out why.
I have a Merlin Legend system.
Need more info?
Any help would be appreciated.

One probably provides cover for the other. Remove coverage, and it will stop. TipHelp@charter.net

Forgive my inexperience, but how do I remove coverage?

Look at the phone via the Operator console:
Menu > Sys Prog > Start (or exit) > More > Central Programming > Prog Ext > enter extension number, check each button, and when yu find the coverage button, delete it. Return to normal ops on the Operator console with the Home or exit button. TipHelp@charter.net

Are they analog phones? If so they are bridged in the wiring somewhere.

Yes, they are analog phones. How do I troubleshoot this?

Thanks

If they are analog phones, they could physically be connected as one extension OR there could be a coverage situation (or forwarding). Print out each extesnion or look at from the operator phone to check on coverage. Check on the wiring to see if thry are physically wired together. You could also unplug the modular plug from the legend for that extension and see if they both went dead. TipHelp@charter.net

If the two extensions are bridged together, the place most logically for this to happen is the MDF (main distribution field). This is where the switch jumpers/cords connect to the building's cables/wires. Trace the jumper or cord from the switch port hand over hand. There are a few different techniques used to bridge extensions depending on the cross connect medium and terminating hardware. Just trace it out and you'll find it if it's there.

However, if the person who wired it was either 1)short on cable pairs, or 2)lazy, the wiring may be split locally to the two phones rather than on the MDF. At this point, depending on your cable records/tools/skills, you may be better-off calling avaya.

How about calling someone with a display phone from each of the analog phones to see what shows up on the LCD? That would tell you if they are the same extension number or 2 seperate numbers. If they are different numbers, then you can look in programming for the solution; if they are the same, then you need a hardware fix.

They show up as two different extensions.
(and when I unplug one, it doesn't affect the other).

Where do I look in programming?

Sys Prog > Exit (or Start)> More > Central Programming > Program Ext > then enter each extension number and look at a button that has bbn programmed as Primary Cover for the other extension. Delete that button. Repeat the process with the other extension.

When I enter Program Ext, I get a Page 1 and Page 2 option.
When I choose Page 1<enter>, I get a screen that says to enter filename. When I choose Page 2, I get sent back to the Switch Administration screen.
I am using Merlin Legend 6.25.

Go to the Operator console.

Menu
Sys Program
Exit
More
Central Programming
Program Extension
[dial the extension number]
Enter

Now look at what lights up. There should be two red LEDs at the bottom, a button without any light lit, and then another button with its LED on. Press that button. If the screen says PriCovXXX-I, press the button for Delete.

Press System Program, and do the other extension.

Goos luck

Problem solved. My system is so old that the button access from the terminal is difficult to navigate, but everyone's suggestions pieced together helped in resolving the issue.

Thanks to all!!
