Is there any method for exporting logins/users?

I'm creating a copy of a database on a second server. All I have found is the option to export a list of users. I would like to maintain each user's password if I can rather than recreating the users manually on the new server.

Thanks for the insight,

I don't think that you will be able to export the passwords from the database as they will be encrypted...although someone may be clever enough to transfer them in their encrypted state. My Home -->

If your copy operation is really a restore, then you will have orphaned users (from SQL Server authentication). To rectify this, I drop the database users and re-add them. Of course, this is because the sid in the syslogins table will not match the sid in the sysusers table in the database (SQL Server 7.0).

However, I'm not sure what your method of the database copy is, or what version of SQL Server you are using.

In any case, the passwords are encrypted and you should not be able to get to them.

Thanks for the info everyone. You've essentially confirmed exactly what I thought. The hardware group wants to rebuild my server, so I'll probably be redoing all my databases with the restore method so they can be moved to new drives if necessary. (This is a SQL Server 7 setup btw.)

I was just hoping to alleviate the support issues afterwards of walking all the users through their new passwords.

I appreciate the feedback!
