When I export to a tab seperated format all fields except numbers have quotation marks around them. I am trying to use this info on the web and the quotations are giving me trouble. Is there a way to change a text field to an alphanumeric field, similar to the general field type in Excel, so the quotation marks will not be there?

You could try exporting to a different format - a fixed field length for example.
A text field is an alphanumeric field - it can hold letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation (including tabs), etc. Malcolm

November is "be kind to dogs and programmers" month. Or is that "dogs or programmers"?
