I have a question. I am trying to export cardfiles from Starfish 99. I was successful, except for one problem. The last category is notes/comments. The original user put about 10 lines in each. When I export the cardfile, only the first entry in the notes/comments exports. Is there a way to get all of it to export? I would appreciate help.

Dear tinamarie,

What are you exporting the Cardfile to? Regards Jim
If links I supply do not work (usually if Starfish updates their Site), check the FAQ area of this Forum for more recent Links.

Dear TinaMarie,
I have just realised that the person who entered the Data in your last Field made a Hard Return after each line they entered.
What this does is create a new Field for each line that they entered you are only able to see the first line as that field has a Title.

The trouble is that all the new Fields have the same name
Which is blank....

If you were to File|Export from SDK99 to a
Tab-Delimited Text (.txt) File
then you could import the File into Access
(I suggest Access as I am familiar with the program)
You could then import the extra Fields as Text and rename them to something more meaningful
e.g. Line 2 Line3 etc
and then once in Access run an update query to append them all into the same field. Regards Jim

Dear TinaMarie,
It occurs to me that if the former statement is NOT true (the Hard Return idea)
That the program you are importing the File into has a field length set too short for that particular field. Regards Jim

Jim:

I thought the file field length was set too short, too, but I can't find a way to change it. Do you know of a way? I tried exporting into several different programs, including Access and Excel. Exporting wasn't a problem. Getting ALL the information was the only problem. Besides cutting and pasting the additional info, I can't think of anything else....

Thanks again,
Tina

Dear Tina,
For the moment I will assume you are using Access97.
1. Go File|Get External Data|Import
2. In the dialogue box that opens choose
Files Of Type Text Files
3. Navigate to the Folder where you saved the Exported File from Sidekick99
in Tab-Delimited Text
4. The dialogue opens up with the suggestion that it is Delimited Text.
5. First select the:
First Row Contains Field Names
6. Click on the Advanced Button and choose for the Fields that contain more than 256 characters (A Lot of Data)
The Memo type,
What I mean by this is you click in the
Data Type box next to any Field you have a lot of Data in and an arrow shows to the right, click on that and in the dropdown list choose Memo
7. Once you have chosen the Type for all the relevant Fields you can save that profile by clicking on the SaveAs Command Button
and
8. Name that Import profile with an obvious name.
9. Click on OK
10. Choose the Table where you are going to put the Data in (A New Table is best at First)
11. Keep clicking Next until you get to the bit where it asks for a primary key (Let Access add that)
12. Next you Name the Table to put the data in
Press return

Then you sit there for a little while and let Access do it.

See faq807-1409 too If you have any problems and don' hesitate to post back here if you still have problems
HTH Regards Jim
