Exporting Sharepoint Sites

If I export my sharepoint site in order to place on a remote server using the utility stsadm.exe will the sharepoint site I am exporting stil be operational upon completion.

e.g does this utility just take a full copy of this site without making it inoperable?

The STSADM utility will only make a backup copy. The original site remains untouched.
