I want to automate the export of a Memo Field into a MS Word document that would then be editable. My problem currently is that the Memo Field is exported as an image and is therefore uneditable. Is there a workaround for this problem? I'm using Approach 9.5 and Word 2000. Thanks

Can be done with LotusScript and OLE automation. A script running in Approach can execute a SQL query on the table and return the memo field in a resultset for the desired record(s).

The script can automate Word, open the document and insert the memo field data. This is easiest if the target Word doc contains a bookmark at the insertion point.

Thanks for your reply. Being something of a novice with Approach, could you direct me to some resources detailing the method you've outlined? That would be a huge help. Thanks.

One more thing: Is this result set from the SQL query editable in Word?

Before we go any further, can you clarify "the Memo Field is exported as an image"? Is this definitely a memo field and not a PicturePlus field?

How are you "exporting" so it results in an image? The only way I can think of is by doing a Copy View in Approach and pasting into Word.

Definitely a memo field. I think we've tried about every way possible, including the one you've mentioned. The only thing that gave us an editable text was to highlight the text in the memo field and copy/paste it into a Word document. But that is too clunky and not amenable to automation.
Maybe I'm using the "image" description too loosely. But the point being that using any of the other methods, it's not possible to edit the text once it's pasted into Word. Word treats it like an image. I can edit the "image" as a whole, but not the text within the image.

OK, then LotusScript is definitely the way to do it. Do you program Office apps with VBA? LotusScript is very similar.

The best place for free resources and support is where I co-host the Approach section. You have to register (free) and login to access the discussion and FAQ folders. Have a look at MaxBid.zip in the Free Downloads section, it shows how to manipulate data with ResultSets. Also, see the Approach | FAQs | Tips & Techniques folder, "Could not open table - scripted SQL statements" for some useful debugging info.

The ResultSet contains a temporary copy of data, stored in memory until closed or the script ends. The data can be inserted as text into a Word doc by OLE automation and thereafter will be editable in Word.
