Hi guys the company I work for has been using corel 7 for all its DTP and for providing vector files for a laser. We now need to be able to send files in Illustrator format or EPS to proffesional printers. All existing artwork is in Corel draw format but files exported then opened in illustrator have placed images missing and are half complete. So we can spend £170 to upgrade to Corel 12 or £470 to buy the latest version of illustrator photoshop and in design.

Corel's EPS export is very good, but a lot is also dependent upon how well you prepare your file. Plus, an EPS file doesn't need to be "opened" in any application. If it was done correctly, it just needs to be *placed* and it will render out fine when printed to a postscript device.

You may want to have a look at Acrobat/Jaws pdf Creator or similar clone. Jaws is available for about £90.00 others are cheaper. Printing to these applications produce a pdf which will also go into Illustrator but can also be taken by many print houses PC or MAC - even prefered by many. I regularly create artwork in Draw (V10) print to Distiller/Acrobat and send to a MAC based imagesetter for both spot and full colour stuff. I've not used Illustrator since V7 (Draw was on 7 too) must say I always struggled with it - may be better now but still very expensive.
On another note Acrobat can open a pdf then save as an eps, import this into Draw using postscript interpreted filter with text to curves and it should come in with embedded font shapes intact (not editable text though)just an advantage Acrobat has over the others, unless anybody knows otherwise.
