I need to export a large number of fields (168) from Access into a comma-delimited text file. When I tried, I got messages telling me that the maximum start position was some number (like 32458) and the start position for one of my fields was something greater than that (like 33891). Is there a way around this?

Try running the query as a make table and then export the table.

How do you create a query to import a text file into Access?

You don't create a query to do it. You create VB code or a macro using TransferText. It's in HELP with examples. Terry M. Hoey
