so we have a couple of guys running exceed and running xterms.. any clues why their ids do not show up in finger command output thanks

Unless they use the xterm -ls (login shell) option to start the xterms, the shells they are running are just subshells of the original process, so they will not be listed in finger.

However there should be at least one login session for each user that is connected via Exceed, I think...

Annihilannic.

They don't show via "last" or who -a"
Have you looked inside /var/adm/wtmpx or utmpx ?

I know that certain types of access do not display but I don't know why
