My report (Crystal 11.5) collects various fields separated by commas. Lines vary a little according to the data, but were typicaly 180 to 190 characeters. They were exported as text for processing by other software. So far, so good.

I was then asked to add another three fields, typically an extra 20 characters. Exporting this as text resulted in errors. Either the line was truncated, or it would chop off the end and put it as a new line. This is for lines of 205 or 210 characters.

I got round this by ignoring their instructions and exporting with settings of '20 characters per inch'. But I'm concerned that this may not be a stable solution. Does anyone have any ideas?

Exporting to CSV would be an alternative, but with CSV I had trouble with suppressed detail line, as I've explained in my other thread.

Is the field being exported in a text box?

I have noticed that fields in text boxes tend to be truncated when exported, whereas if you create a formula to concatenate the fields and place this directly on the report, they export without truncation.

No, I'm not using text boxes. Thanks anyway.

Like you I had all sorts of problems exporting, in the end the only one which worked cleanly was Tab separated values. It creates a.ttx file but can be renamed .txt and imported into Excel.

Thanks, tab separated is another option that can work. Of course it puts everything in double quotes, but these could be removed easily.

Madawc,

I assume that you are "printing" a report in landscape orientation as 11 inches X 20 characters per inch is about how much data you have per line.

Since Crystal is historically a method of producing hard copy reports, do you have access to a large format printer\plotter that will produce output greater than 11 inches wide? Saving that printer as the default with the report, will allow you to add more characters per line or alternately to increase the character size by increasing the printable area to larger than 11 inches. The only issue then will be if someone ever tries to produce an actual hard copy of the report.

Thanks. I'll keep the methods in mind for future need.
