Export to Excel needs Excel worksheet saved

I am currently running a report that I export to Excel, then another spreadsheet runs a macro that uses the cell values from my exported spreadsheet, when I open my non exported excel file that references my exported values I am prompted to update the data, pressing yes I get the error message, "Can not find file". If I open the exported spreadsheet, change nothing but save it, when I open my other sheet no errors appear. I export to Version 8 of Excel, but currently use Excel 2000.

Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope it makes sense, has any body come across this before, or heard of a work around.
